VW Golf R Won’t Start Right Away

I’m having a funky issue with my 2017 Golf R. Every now and then, when I hit the start button, the gauges light up, but the engine doesn’t crank. I have to hit it again, and then it starts like normal. Any clue what’s going on?

Could you take a look at the starter to ensure all connections are secure? Also, when it fails to start, does it remain completely silent, or do you hear the starter trying to engage in some way?

I’ve had something similar happen on my GTI before! For me, it turned out to be the clutch sensor. Intermittent starting issues like this can often point to a problem in the ignition circuit. The push-button starter, clutch sensor, or starter motor itself could be at fault. It’s also worth checking the battery connections and grounding points for any corrosion or loose wiring. If you’ve recently had work done on the car, it might be worth revisiting that area too, sometimes a loose connector can cause headaches. If it keeps happening, the sensor might need adjusting or replacing. Not a huge fix, but definitely worth checking out!

Hello @zugzwang88, the setup looks good, but when it fails to start, I don’t hear any sound from the starter at all. The dashboard lights up, the gauges do a quick sweep, but then... nothing. Hit that button again, though, and it starts up immediately without any delay.

@Agent_Edgar_Ross That’s awesome! I haven’t had any work done lately, but I’ll for sure take a look at the clutch sensor and the wiring. I’ve been putting off checking the battery connections, too, so that’s a solid reminder. I’ll see if I can track it down.

Sounds like an electrical gremlin. I've seen similar things with failing relays or a weak battery. Maybe check those?

That's a really strange starting problem you're having with your Golf R! It seems like there's some kind of communication issue between the start button and the car's systems like the immobilizer or starter relay. Because it happens sometimes and not always it's probably not a simple issue like a dead battery or a faulty starter. Start by making sure your battery connections are clean and secure.
